Many people advocating for Latin study point to Latin students scoring much higher on the SAT and ACT. While very true, this statement wildly misses the point. It seeks to find value in Latin study only (or primarily) through pragmatic outcome value. It is like saying that learning cursive penmanship has value because learning script allows the student to have a better signature. Again, while true, this is a by-product of a host of benefits, not the primary reason for learning.  Here are ten reasons to learn Latin and ten reasons why Lake Pointe includes the study in its curriculum.

Top 10 Reasons for Studying Latin

These are from an article by Cheryl Lowe in the Memoria Press publication, The Classical Teacher.

1.) Latin is the next step after phonics.
2.) Half of our English vocabulary is made up of Latin words and roots.
3.) Latin provides the root words for all of the modern sciences.
4.) Latin is the language of law, government, logic, and theology.
5.) Latin is the most efficient way to learn English grammar.
better than English teaches English.
6.) Latin is the best preparation for learning any language.
7.) Latin effectively develops and trains the mind.
8.) Latin aids the mind in other ways, because it is a unit study that connects to every subject
9.) Latin is transformative.
10.) Latin is the language of Western Civilization.
