Debates

A debatable skill

Lake Pointe uses the format of formal debate to help equip students for their futures. No matter where the Lord might call, thoughtful preparation and the arts of communication and thinking on one's feet are excellent tools to have sharpened and ready. History courses are used as the vehicle for formal debates, since the facts are available, but the actions themselves are debatable.

Debate is useful to equip students in various ways:

  • Hones the skills of argumentation
  • Causes a student to consider both sides of an argument
  • Increases a student's presentation confidence
  • Exercises the skills learned in formal logic
  • Fosters an appreciation of working on a team
  • Challenges participants to demonstrate courtesy to competitors
