3-Peat! Lady Mariners Win Cross Country State Title!

The sky was bright blue, the sun was shining and there was a slight breeze--overall, a perfect day for the SCACS State Cross Country Championship meet.  Seven teams came from across the state to compete at Walnut Grove Christian School in Fort Mill.  Teams arrived to find a separate tent set up for them and a gift bag to welcome them.

As the race began, the Lake Pointe team strategically took up residence in the middle of the pack.  As the race progressed, the team began to show their skill and determination by steadily advancing through the ranks.  Freshman Haden McCarter led the pace by finishing in first place, almost thirty seconds ahead of the second place runner.   Sophomore Peighton Quin finished in fourth place, with Melia McCarter and Shauna Somerville rounding out the top four times for the LPA team, in fifth and sixth places overall.  When the dust settled, six of the top eight runners were Mariners, ensuring a Lake Pointe team victory for the third year in a row.

First ever home XC meet

Not only does Lake Pointe's cross country team spend its competitive time on the the trail, the runners seem to always be on the road. The squad travels around the three local counties, and then to Greenville, Clemson and more.
But this season, the Mariners have stayed a little closer to home, thanks to a newly-constructed course at the LPA campus. The three-mile trail takes advantage of an adjoining stretch of utilities land that was graciously leased to LPA by Crescent Properties / Duke Energy. The course features hills, woods, and open stretches. Envisioned by former XC coach a nancy Turner and Athletic Director Marc Kurtz, the trail construction's final shaping was influenced by coach Beth Donnelly and Creekside Landscaping's Kevin Wright.
After training on the home course in the sweltering heat of summer practices, the Mariners held their first ever home meet, hosting Walnut Grove Christian School and the York Home School team.
Lake Pointe's Hayden McCarter took top individual honors, leading the Lady Mariners to victory.
