A win-some week for volleyball
The women's varsity team enjoyed a week at home, with some great play and mixed results.
The Mariners hosted Greenville's Hampton Park Tuesday. The match was well-played by both teams, but in the end, the Panthers emerged victoriously. LPA's second year at the higher 2-A level is bringing the players some tough competition, and the Mariners have really been rising to the occasion.
Thursday, LPA hosted Fort Mill's Walnut Grove. The Mariners were able to bounce back from Tuesday's loss to wrestle this match away from the spirited Warrior squad. The win puts Lake Pointe at 2-1 on the season in the conference.
McCarter finishes strong
Hayden McCarter is in familiar territory: out front.
The swift sophomore took first place in this month's earlier home meet against South Point and Walnut Grove. Wednesday, in a Clover High-hosted meet that included York Comprehensive High, McCarter placed top 5 in the women's race.
Coach Beth Donnely has strong hopes that the summer training will continue to pay off in stronger finishes for all her runners. If that's the case, McCarter is setting a strong pace.
Having won top female honors in last year's SCACS league, the tenth grader is a strong contender to repeat at number one at the SCACS state meet in late October.
Varsity volleyball is Won-and-Oh
The Volleyball season kicked off with a big win on the road, as the Lady Mariners were able to outlast the very talented and experienced Lions team of Grace Christian in Columbia.
LPA lost the first game, but came back to win three straight against the stiffest of competition. The comeback attitude is encouraging to see, showing the Mariners still have the mettle they displayed in some dramatic come-from-behind matches last season.
1st home meet 2015
LPA held its first cross country home meet of the season, hosting the South Point Patriots of Pageland and the Warriors of Walnut Grove. Lake Pointe's course is a challenging combination of hills, open field, and wooded areas, but a hot, summer sun added real difficulty.
Mariner runners were the fastest in both the men's and women's races, with Hayden McCarter setting the pace for the ladies and with Isaiah Mayhall coming from behind to capture the top spot for the guys.
The Mariners won the ladies' meet, while South Point was first in the men's race.
